Loosening OUR GRIP
THE BEAUTY OF THE UNEXPECTED…
Some of life’s most meaningful blessings arrive unannounced. The surprise pregnancy. The serendipitous meeting that turned into a lifelong friendship. The unforeseen timing of important milestones. With the unpredictable nature of life, why is it that we hold on so tightly to expectations about how it should unfold? How do we let go of these expectations and learn to go with the flow?
We all have an attachment to how we believe life should unfold. We make plans, predict outcomes, and create visions of the future we want to see. This is a normal human thought process based in survival. But life has a way of moving in its own rhythm. Although we try to plan and predict, life often leads us down paths we never anticipated. If we become attached to an outcome, we can feel disappointed, frustrated, and resistant when reality doesn’t match our expectations. This can make it difficult feel open to the possibilities of life, which could be far greater than anything we could have planned for ourselves.
Letting go of expectations is not about giving up on our dreams or living without purpose. It’s all about loosen our grip on certainty. It’s feeling ok with the unknown and trusting that everything happens for a reason. When we release the need to control every outcome, we open the door to unexpected blessings in our lives—blessings that could never have emerged from our carefully constructed plans.

Opening the door to possibility…
Expectations narrow vision. They convince us happiness can only be found if events happen in a certain way, on a certain timeline. But this viewpoint is looking through human eyes, with human limitations. The Divine is limitless, and infinitely more creative than the boundaries of human imagination. In the grander scheme of things, every unexpected turn, every sudden change in direction, leads us exactly where our soul was meant to go.
The key to accessing the true limitless possibility of the Divine in our lives is through adaptability. Adaptability is the key to thriving, as a species and as an individual. The more we meet uncertainty with curiosity, instead of fear, we adapt to the ups and downs of our journey here. We shift our perception. Instead of asking, “Why didn’t life go the way I wanted?” we begin to wonder, “What new path is unfolding before me?” We begin to view obstacles as the beginning of something meaningful.
Through adaptability we can begin to find peace in our lives by letting go. This peace is not found in control. It is found in release. Holding on tightly to life never stops change from happening. But as we release our attachments and welcome life with openness, we feel less stressed out by change. We even begin to feel excited by it, because we know that with change comes the potential for growth, expansion, and greater awareness.
Life is ever changing. It flows and moves and is always full of surprises. This is how it is meant to be. We are not meant to predict every step of our journey, but to walk it with an open heart. Disappointments and successes, unexpected changes, moments of illness and healing—it’s all part of the design for our lives. Every time we release expectations, we open the door to possibility and allow this divine plan to unfold.
BECOME OPEN TO THE JOURNEY THAT FINDS YOU…
Some of the most meaningful chapters of our lives are not the ones we plan, they are the ones that find us. It’s easy to get into the headspace of careful planning and mapping out every moment of our lives, thinking we can find fulfillment this way. Nothing missed, everything choreographed. But it is in the unexpected that many of our most important life lesson are found. A chance encounter turns into an unexpected opportunity. A difficult season that brings out our hidden strengths. A disappointment that becomes the spark for an amazing new vision. Life is not only shaped by the paths we choose, but also by the paths that choose us.
Becoming open to the unexpected changes in our lives allows us to see uncertainty in a new light. We view the unknown as something to embrace instead of fear, as a place of infinite possibility. We learn to walk with curiosity and excitement, instead of clinging to a fixed destination. Every twist and turn becomes a teacher, a guide, there to awaken us to a higher state of being. And we welcome the journey designed just for us.
Put it into practice:
NOTICE YOUR “SHOULD” STATEMENTS:
Throughout the day, pay attention to moments when you think, “This shouldn’t be happening,” or “Things should have turned out differently.” Gently replace those thoughts with, “This is what is happening. What can this moment teach me?” Shifting from resistance to curiosity opens the door to greater peace.
STAY OPEN TO NEW POSSIBILITIES:
Set goals and make plans with care, but remain willing to adapt as life unfolds. Remind yourself that having a direction is valuable, yet remaining open to a different path often leads to experiences richer than those you originally imagined. Reflect on a time when something didn’t go as you hoped, yet eventually led to growth, healing, or an unexpected opportunity. Let that memory remind you that today’s uncertainty may become tomorrow’s blessing.
FIND OPPORTUNITIES TO BE FLEXIBLE:
Once each day, intentionally let go of a preference or expectation. Take a different route home, try a new approach to a familiar task, welcome someone else’s idea, or allow your plans to change without resistance. These small moments of adaptability strengthen your ability to meet life’s larger uncertainties with openness, resilience, and trust.
EMBRACE THE BLESSINGS OF TODAY:
Before going to sleep, reflect on one moment that unfolded differently than you expected. Rather than judging it as good or bad, simply ask, “How did this experience help me grow?” With time, this practice trains the heart to see change not as an obstacle, but as an invitation to deeper wisdom and greater possibility.

Remember: the Divine carefully and lovingly designed each of our journeys for our greatest growth. Sometimes what looks to be an unfortunate detour is the exact path we need to take. The unexpected happens to bring people, experiences, and lessons that our hearts just when we need them most.
Once we release the need to know exactly what will happen in life, we start to pay attention to what is actually taking place around us. We see that every moment has something to offer, every interaction has something to teach. Letting go becomes a sacred act that opens the soul to the true potential of the human experience.
