The Rhythm of Renewal
HOLDING LIFE WITH OPEN HANDS…
ThĂch Nhất Hạnh once said, “It is not impermanence that makes us suffer. What makes us suffer is wanting things to be permanent when they are not.” We naturally grow attached to the people we love. We are comforted by our routines and the identities we’ve built in our lives. We long for certainty and predictability in a temporary world. However, somewhere deep down we know that change is inevitable. In fact, change may be the only constant we know we can count on.
Although we try with all our might to hold on tightly to life, time marches on and always escapes our grasp. However, this does not mean that the happiness we feel inside is lost, or that the joy we experience will disappear. It simply means that nothing in the physical world is meant to remain unchanged. While the spirit world is eternal, here on earth every sunrise eventually gives way to evening. Every spring becomes summer, becomes fall, becomes winter. Change seems to be woven into the very fabric of the human experience.
In becoming more adaptable, we learn to move with change. To flow with it. An open soul holds life with open hands, and in doing so no longer agrees to view change as something to fear. Instead, we see impermanence as a teacher and a guide, leading us to our greatest potential. We become more present, appreciating every moment for the gift it is rather than fearing the day it might change. Adapting to the temporary nature of life allows us to see that although changes happen, love always remains constant.

The grace of surrender…
One of the most courageous acts soul can embrace is surrender. It is often misunderstood as giving up, but true surrender is more about releasing control over the outcome. It is about letting go of our expectations and trusting that life is unfolding through divine wisdom and timing. When we surrender to impermanence of life, every moment becomes a miracle. We begin to slow down and really take in our surroundings. We have an easier time understanding what’s really important in life.
In truth, it’s common to think suffering comes from not getting what we want. We cling to the familiar, to what brings us joy or fulfillment. We hold on tightly to the material, hoping it will never change. But when we resist change, we miss out on all that life really has to offer. In the end, this resistance creates more pain than the change itself. By surrendering to impermanence, and allowing life to feel fleeting, we embrace the present moment as it arrives, in whatever form it takes. Through this surrender, deep gratitude is born.
As we practice surrender by embracing the changes of life, we find out just how much this release impacts our perception. Instead of focusing on what might be slipping away, or what we might lose, the focus shifts to appreciating the current moment, just as it is. We see that true peace does not come from superficialities, but from cultivating an open, loving heart. Over time, we begin cherishing every moment without expectation.
Although life will continue to change, and eventually come to an end, the soul is ever-present, gently guided by the Divine through light and love. Even when the path ahead is unclear, we are always guided toward our highest growth. Remaining open to life, accepting its impermanence, and living in gratitude helps us break through the illusion of the material realm and remember our timeless nature.
FIND PEACE BEYOND ATTACHMENT…
Throughout our journey here, we naturally form attachments—to our family and friends, to our surroundings, to our thoughts and beliefs. But this human existence is impermanent. Eventually, biological cells will fall away, histories will be forgotten, and all that we know in this life we no longer be. However, in the grander scheme of consciousness, our human reality is but a blink of a eye. Beyond the realm of life, our true nature is that of spirit, enduring, everlasting, and whole.
The attachments we form in this life have a purpose. They exist to serve our overall goal of growth and expansion. Attachments form from deep connections with the people we love. They are born from the dreams we cherish, and dig their heels in from the moments we wish could last forever. But although these bonds enrich our lives, suffering occurs when we believe our peace depends on it. An open soul understands true peace is not found in holding tightly to the elements of human life, but in the love we develop from them. It is this love that lasts forever. It is this love that is eternal.
Put it into practice:
NOTICE WHAT YOU’RE HOLDING ON TO:
Throughout the day, pay attention to situations where you feel resistant to change. It’s easy to try to hold on to situations, materials objects, or even time, wishing things could remain the same.
HOLD LIFE WITH OPEN HANDS:
True value is about presence, not permanence. The next time you feel controlling or overly attached, try to imagine holding important people, possessions, and situations in your life with gentle, open hands.
FIND COMFORT IN THE RHYTHMS OF NATURE:
Change is natural, and doesn’t have to feel frightening. Spend time outdoors observing the world around you. Green leaves transforming into vibrant shades or orange, red, and yellow. A river flowing without resistance. Remember that change is the rhythm through which all life grows.
REMEMBER THAT EVERY MOMENT MATTERS:
Think of life like a really long, immersive adventure game, filled with unknown turns, exciting ups, sorrowful downs, exhilarating vistas, and powerful moments. Every scene is important to the story, and every experience is precious.
Remember: as we release the illusion of permanence, we are able to see that lasting peace does not come from freezing time. By learning to flow and adapt to change, we no longer measure our worth by what we possess. We no longer base our value in the tangible, material world. We stop fearing the natural cycles of life and begin participating in it with openness.
Instead, we find stability in the presence of the Divine within us. We understand that our truest self is also divine—free from suffering, expanded beyond form. And while the world around us will always change, the love and light we have inside ourselves lasts forever. What is truly lasting is the awakened heart, meeting every moment with trust, grace, and love.
